Chapter 16 - Margaret’s Guilt

Margaret blamed herself.
“I should have given you the pendant sooner.”
“No.”
“I watched Celina get closer.”
“So did I.”
“Sofia trusted me.”
“And you followed her instructions.”
Margaret shook her head.
“She was afraid of exactly this.”
Not exactly.
I corrected her.
“Sofia was afraid of people using us. She couldn’t know Celina would throw Ellie off a swing.”
Margaret looked at me.
“You always do that.”
“What?”
“Turn fear into logistics.”
Probably.
Useful habit.
Sometimes limiting.
Then Margaret said:
“Sofia worried you would be so determined not to appear weak after she died that you would let competent people get too close because you respected competence.”
That annoyed me because it was true.
May you like
Celina was competent.
I mistook that for trustworthiness.
