Chapter 13 - Ellie’s “Lessons”

Ellie told a child interviewer several things I did not know.

Celina had been giving her:

“lessons.”

Not school lessons.

Family lessons.

Who sits where.

Who speaks first.

How children behave around powerful guests.

And one stranger category:

“People Daddy might need later.”

“What does that mean?”

The interviewer asked.

Ellie shrugged.

“Miss Celina says family changes.”

That phrase bothered me.

“What else?”

“She said sometimes daughters grow up disappointing.”

I had to leave the observation room.

Anthony followed.

“Boss.”

“Don’t.”

I walked outside.

Hands shaking.

For months, Celina had been telling my daughter that belonging was conditional.

And because Celina used Sofia’s name, Ellie partly believed she had permission.
