Chapter 21 - Mara explains herself

Months later, during therapeutic mediation, Mara spoke directly to me.
“I thought you would never let us become a family.”
I answered:
“You locked a toddler behind a gate.”
“I know.”
“You made her cry to use it against me.”
“I know.”
“Why?”
Her eyes filled.
“Because every room had Rachel in it.”
I stayed quiet.
She continued:
“Daniel compared everything to Rachel. Olivia wanted you whenever she was upset. The trust had Rachel’s rules. The house had Rachel’s photos. I felt like I had married into a family where a dead woman had more authority than I ever would.”
There it was.
Not money alone.
Not jealousy alone.
Erasure.
Mara tried to erase Rachel’s continued presence by pushing out everyone connected to her.
Especially me.
