Chapter 5 - Mara

Mara Caldwell met Daniel through work.
She was polished.
Intelligent.
Organized.
Good with Olivia initially.
That mattered.
I did not oppose the relationship.
Rachel was dead.
Daniel was thirty-five.
I did not expect him to remain frozen forever.
When he told me they were getting married, I said:
“If she loves Olivia, I’ll learn to love the arrangement.”
Mara smiled.
“Olivia deserves a complete family.”
Something about the word complete bothered me.
But I said nothing.
Then small things changed.
My Wednesday visits became:
“Not convenient.”
Saturday breakfast became:
“We’re trying to create routines.”
Video calls shortened.
Mara started correcting Olivia when she called my house:
“Home.”
“That’s Grandpa’s house, sweetheart. Your home is here.”
Technically true.
Emotionally strange.
Then Daniel began saying:
May you like
“She gets dysregulated after seeing you.”
I had never heard him use that word before.
