Chapter 4 - Rachel

Rachel Dawson Miller was my only daughter.
She died at thirty-four.
Cancer.
Fast.
Cruel.
Eleven months from diagnosis to funeral.
Daniel had been good during most of it.
I need to say that.
He drove her to chemotherapy.
Changed dressings.
Slept in hospital chairs.
Cooked.
Cried in my garage when he thought Rachel could not hear him.
He loved her.
I believe that.
After Rachel died, Daniel became someone I barely recognized.
Grief does not always make people softer.
Sometimes it makes them desperate for control.
Olivia was eighteen months old when she lost her mother.
I began visiting four days a week.
Breakfast.
Playground.
Doctor appointments.
Whatever Daniel needed.
At first, he called me:
May you like
“Lifesaver.”
Then Mara entered.
