Chapter 24 - Olivia asks about the gate

She was five when she asked.
“Why did Mara lock me?”
I wanted to say:
Because she was cruel.
Easy answer.
Instead:
“She thought she was teaching you something, and she was wrong.”
“What?”
“That you had to stop wanting Grandpa when you were scared.”
Olivia frowned.
“Why?”
“She thought loving one person made it harder to love another.”
“That silly.”
“Yes.”
Then:
“Did Daddy know?”
I hated that question.
“Yes.”
Her face changed.
“He let?”
“Yes.”
Silence.
I added:
“He knows that was wrong.”
Olivia nodded.
