Chapter 11 - Lauren’s name

The worst emotional abuse involved Lauren.
Not constant.
Targeted.
When Eli resisted Simone’s authority, she sometimes said:
“Your mother would hate how you behave.”
Or:
“Lauren didn’t raise you to be this selfish.”
How did Simone know?
She had never met Lauren.
She knew stories from me.
Photographs.
Videos.
The pieces of my dead wife I had shared because I wanted my new wife to understand the family she was joining.
Simone turned some of those pieces into leverage.
When confronted, she said:
“I was trying to remind him of his values.”
I answered:
“You used his dead mother to make him obey.”
She cried.
“That is not what I meant.”
Meaning mattered.
Effect mattered too.
Eli told his therapist later:
“It felt like Mom was joining her side.”
That sentence ended any remaining ambiguity for me about whether the marriage could survive.
Not because every cruel sentence makes reconciliation impossible.
Because the pattern required Simone to occupy Lauren’s memory as a disciplinary tool.
I could not unhear it.

Neither could Eli.
