Chapter 15 - My employer

My company noticed.

Of course.

I canceled travel.

Missed meetings.

An executive vice president asked:

“What do you need?”

I almost said:

Nothing.

Old reflex.

Instead:

“I need reduced overnight travel for several months.”

We restructured my territory.

Another director took western accounts temporarily.

My bonus that year dropped about eighteen percent.

We survived.

I remained employed.

The world did not collapse because Marcus stopped being the person on every plane.

That taught me something embarrassing.

I had spent years describing travel as unavoidable.

Some was.

Some was ego.

Clients ask for you enough times and indispensability starts feeling like identity.

Eli did not need me never to travel again.

He needed my work not to require him to tolerate danger quietly.

May you like

Different.
