Chapter 17 - What the bruises could prove

The bruises did not prove months of severe beating.

Dr. Moran was clear.

Bruises on upper arms could come from:

Sports.

Falls.

Grabbing.

Many mechanisms.

Eli’s account mattered.

So did timing.

Photographs.

School notes.

Messages.

Simone’s admissions.

She acknowledged physically holding Eli’s arms during arguments.

She denied intending to bruise.

She denied striking him.

Evidence supported that she had not been punching him.

No belt.

No object.

No hidden torture.

The criminal question became:

Did repeated forceful grabbing, pushing, blocking, and isolation rise to child endangerment or assault under local law?

Prosecutors believed yes.

Defense argued:

Poor discipline.

Not criminal abuse.

The distinction would take months.

Meanwhile the parenting truth did not need to wait.

Eli was afraid of her when I traveled.

That alone was enough to change the home.
