Chapter 11 - Lila Heard Everything

Not everything.
Enough.
The first night, she heard a tapping.
Three knocks.
Pause.
Three knocks.
She told Adrian.
“Daddy in floor.”
Adrian said:
“Pipes.”
The second day, Caleb discovered the heating channel.
He called:
“Lila.”
Too weak to shout loudly.
Sound traveled unpredictably.
Sometimes she heard.
Sometimes not.
She lay beside the vent.
“Daddy?”
“Yes.”
“Come out.”
“I can’t.”
“Why?”
Caleb did not tell a four-year-old:
Your uncle imprisoned me because of financial crimes.
He said:
“Get a grown-up.”
“I got Uncle Adrian.”
“No.”
Then Adrian entered the room.
Caleb stopped speaking.
That pattern repeated.
Lila told preschool:
“Daddy whispers.”
Adults interpreted it through grief and absence.
Reasonably at first.
Children say impossible-sounding things.
Then the teacher, Ms. Hannah Cole, asked:
“What does Daddy say?”
Lila answered:
“Get a grown-up. Not Uncle Adrian.”
That changed the teacher’s judgment.

She reported it.
That call saved Caleb.
