Chapter 6 - Caleb Wakes
I was not present when Caleb gave his first full statement.
Detective Marisol Grant took over the criminal investigation.
But I remained involved because of Lila.
Caleb woke the next afternoon.
Hospital.
Fluids.
Imaging.
No life-threatening internal injuries.
Severe dehydration.
Sprained ankle.
Concussion.
Bruising.
Several superficial injuries from trying to move inside the rough cellar.
He asked for Lila immediately.
Doctors delayed the reunion until he was stable enough.
Then she entered.
She ran.
Stopped when a nurse told her:
“Gentle.”
Then walked the last three feet.
Caleb cried.
No dramatic speech.
He simply touched her hair.
“You heard me?”
Lila nodded.
“Floor.”
“I know.”
“Uncle Adrian said you went away.”
Caleb closed his eyes.
Then:
“I didn’t.”

Only after Lila left did Caleb tell them what happened.
