Chapter 21 - The Vent

Caleb wanted the old heating vent removed.

Lila did not.

“That Daddy phone.”

That nearly broke him.

The therapist suggested they not rush.

So the vent stayed for several months.

Lila occasionally lay beside it.

Not listening for trapped voices.

Playing.

She sent toy animals:

“messages.”

A plastic giraffe would sit beside the vent.

Then a dinosaur.

Then a doll.

Caleb joined once.

He lay on the floor.

“Hello?”

Lila answered from three feet away.

“Daddy, you not under there.”

“I know.”

“You silly.”

He laughed.

That laugh mattered.

Eventually, during renovations, the vent was removed because it no longer served any function.

Lila did not object.
