Chapter 18 - The Bigger Truth Beneath the Floor
By then, we understood why Caleb was under the floor.
But another question remained.
Why had the cavity been prepared?
Inside the cellar, forensic teams found more than water bottles.
A battery lantern.
Folded blanket.
Bucket.
Duct tape.
A cheap padlock mechanism fixed to the access hatch.
And an extension cord routed through the maintenance channel.
Some items were recent.
Some were not.
Receipts from Adrian’s card showed the lantern, bucket, and padlock had been purchased three days before Caleb disappeared.
That changed the timeline.
Adrian had not improvised everything after an argument.
He had prepared.
Not necessarily with a nine-day plan.
But he anticipated restraining Caleb.
Investigators reconstructed the preceding week.
Caleb had emailed Adrian:
Monday morning we’re meeting with an outside accountant. Bring every bank record.
Adrian responded:
Fine.
Three hours later, he purchased the padlock.
The next day:
Battery lantern.
Then:
Prepaid phone.
Then:
Extra water.
Preparation.
The argument on disappearance night was not simply a spontaneous explosion.
Adrian knew confrontation was coming.
The hidden cellar offered a place where he could isolate Caleb long enough to force a decision.
The deepest truth was not the money.
It was entitlement.
Adrian believed he could temporarily erase his brother until the problem became manageable.
Then each day created a bigger problem.
So he erased more.
Car.
Phone.
Emails.
Story.
He told police Caleb had left.
He told Lila her father needed time away.
He told preschool Caleb was dealing with:
“mental-health stress.”
He told clients Caleb had taken emergency leave.
Every lie placed another floorboard over the truth.
The only person who refused the story was four years old.
Lila did not know banking.
Kidnapping statutes.
Forensic timelines.
She knew her father’s voice.
Adults had explanations.
Pipes.
Grief.
Imagination.
But she kept saying:
May you like
Daddy is under the floor.
She was right.
