Chapter 19 - The Plea

Adrian’s case did not go to a cinematic six-week trial.

After extensive discovery and pretrial motions, he accepted a plea agreement.

Serious felony counts.

Kidnapping/unlawful confinement.

Aggravated assault.

Financial offenses.

Identity-related misuse.

The exact sentencing structure reflected state law, criminal history, injury severity, and negotiated dismissal of overlapping counts.

He received a substantial prison sentence.

Measured in years.

Not life.

The judge addressed him directly.

“You did not make one bad decision.”

Then:

“You renewed the decision every time you returned to that cellar and closed the door again.”

That sentence stayed with Caleb.

Because it separated accident from pattern.

Adrian apologized.

Caleb did not respond.

Lila was not brought into court to hear it.
