Chapter 10 - Octavia created a market for a successor who had not been chosen

The real mechanism was more sophisticated than forging a family preference to flatter her son.
Octavia had spent almost three years positioning Julian as if he were already the designated second-generation successor to the Founder Continuity Option.
She used the false memorandum in private, not public filings.
At:
Family-office presentations.
Private lender discussions.
Joint-venture introductions.
Wealth-management meetings.
A succession-planning retreat.
The language varied.
Victor’s male-line preference.
The next Maddox generation is expected to move through Julian.
Founder intent favors Julian after Silvio.
Why did that matter financially?
Because Octavia had created a separate investment vehicle:
Crane Legacy Partners.
It was legitimate on paper.
She raised capital from wealthy family-connected investors to acquire minority stakes in businesses expected to remain close to Maddox Consolidated.
Her pitch depended partly on:
Privileged family access.
Long-term continuity.
And Julian eventually becoming an influential Maddox decision-maker.
She did not sell shares in an inheritance.
She sold investments while implying that her son’s future corporate influence was much more certain than it actually was.
Total capital raised:
Approximately $38 million.
Most invested in real assets and legitimate minority positions.
No giant missing fortune.
But certain investors had received presentations describing Julian as:
next-line family successor
or:
anticipated holder of founder-vote continuity rights.
That was false.
Then one private side letter made everything worse.
A $6 million investor commitment carried a performance fee increase if Julian obtained:
“A designated governance role within Maddox Consolidated or its successor control structure”
before age twenty-eight.
Octavia personally stood to earn several million dollars over time if Julian became what she had told investors he was becoming.
Victor’s real neutral policy endangered that narrative.
Betsy’s existence made it visually obvious that the next generation was not just Julian.
So Octavia invented a male-line preference.
Then she pushed it into internal records until repetition made it look historical.
She had not changed Victor’s heir.
She had tried to change the evidence of Victor’s succession policy.

That was why I told her:
“Not him. You.”
