Chapter 3 - Victor Maddox never promised Betsy an inheritance

My father was wealthy.

Very.

He founded Maddox Consolidated, a holding company that owned legitimate interests in:

Commercial real estate.

Food distribution.

Freight depots.

Hotels.

Construction equipment.

And several businesses that had historically sat too close to criminal associates.

Our family reputation was not fictional inside the story of my life.

Some of it had been earned badly.

By the time Betsy was born, I had begun separating legitimate assets from people whose preferred contracts involved threats rather than lawyers.

Victor hated some of my reforms.

Supported others.

But he never told Betsy:

You will inherit the empire.

She was eight.

Children should inherit childhood before corporate voting rights.

What did exist was a company succession arrangement.

That was different.

And far more technical than Octavia’s word “heir” suggested.
