Chapter 25 - Betsy refuses the family portrait

At ten, Betsy was invited to an anniversary dinner for Maddox Consolidated.

The photographer wanted:

Victor.

Me.

Betsy.

Julian.

A “four generation continuity” image, even though mathematically that phrasing was questionable because Julian and Betsy were same generation.

I said:

“Your choice.”

Betsy asked:

“Do I have to?”

“No.”

She declined.

Why?

“My shoes hurt.”

There went a century of patriarchal symbolism.

She changed into sneakers and went to dessert.

The company survived.

Photographer survived.

Victor complained for six minutes.

Then survived.

Choice is less dramatic than dynasty.

That is one reason powerful families resist it.
