Chapter 12 - Caroline’s role was uglier than silence

Caroline had not filed the final report.
But she had helped.
That mattered.
She told investigators:
“My mother said Clara was becoming obsessed with work.”
Why believe her?
Because Caroline resented me too.
There it was.
I had become financially successful earlier.
I helped Vivian.
I made decisions quickly.
Caroline often felt like the softer daughter.
The one who stayed near Mom.
Vivian used that.
“She said you thought I was useless.”
“I never said that.”
“I know now.”
“Did you know then?”
Caroline cried.
“No.”
I believed half of that.
She wanted to believe something unflattering about me.
Vivian supplied it.
Then Caroline admitted:
“She told me if there was ever a real problem, someone needed records so Lucy wouldn’t disappear into the system.”
That language frightened Caroline into compliance.
