Chapter 8 - Caroline finally calls me

My sister had sent seventeen texts.

I ignored them.

Then she called from a different number.

I answered.

“What?”

“Clara, I need to tell you something.”

“If this is about Mom—”

“It is.”

I almost hung up.

Then Caroline said:

“She’s been collecting things about you.”

Silence.

“What things?”

“Screenshots.”

“Of what?”

“Your work calendar. Messages about Lucy being picky. Pictures.”

“What pictures?”

Caroline started crying.

That scared me more than anything.

“Pictures of Lucy eating at Mom’s.”

I sat.

“Explain.”

“Mom started saying you were neglecting her.”

“When?”

“Months ago.”

“And you believed her?”

“I thought she was exaggerating.”

“That is not an answer.”

Caroline whispered:

“I helped her organize a folder.”

I felt cold.

“What folder?”

May you like

“She called it a concern file.”

There it was.
