Chapter 14 - Briarwood reviews its own mistake

The school had not done anything wrong by making the mandated report.

But it had a data problem.

Three separate “sources” appeared in its file:

Vivian.

Caroline.

An “anonymous family concern.”

The anonymous submission metadata?

It originated from an email relay service.

Not immediately identifiable.

Later civil discovery connected the underlying account recovery number to Vivian.

So the school believed it had:

Grandmother concern.

Aunt concern.

Anonymous concern.

Actually:

Vivian.

Caroline acting under Vivian’s influence.

Vivian again.

Briarwood changed its safeguarding practice afterward.

Not:

Ignore multiple reports.

Instead:

Record source relationships when known.

Distinguish independent corroboration from repetition of one family allegation.

Important.

You do not want schools dismissing reports because relatives know each other.

You also do not want three echoes mistaken for three witnesses.
