Chapter 19 - Caroline loses access to Lucy too

Caroline asked:
“Can I see her?”
I said no.
“For how long?”
“I don’t know.”
“I told the truth.”
“After helping build the lie.”
She cried.
I did not soften.
Then Lucy asked about her.
“Aunt Caroline sad?”
“Probably.”
“Can she come?”
I paused.
“You want her to?”
Lucy shrugged.
“Maybe.”
Children are not courtroom exhibits.
They can miss people who failed them.
So I discussed it with Lucy’s therapist.
Eventually:
One supervised visit.
Neutral place.
No Vivian.
Caroline apologized directly.
“I helped Grandma say things about your mom that were not true.”
Lucy asked:
“Why?”
Caroline answered:
“I believed Grandma instead of checking.”
Good.
Then:
“I should have asked your mom.”
Better.
Lucy handed her a crayon.
