Chapter 26 - Christmas again

One year later, I did not return to Vivian’s house for Christmas.
Lucy and I hosted.
Caroline came.
My friend Paige? no lawyers at family Christmas. Better close friends and a few relatives.
Twelve people.
Small table.
Simple food.
Lucy helped make mashed potatoes.
Mostly by eating butter.
At five-thirty she asked:
“Can I eat a roll?”
I said:
“Yes.”
She took one.
Nobody corrected her.
Caroline looked at me.
We both noticed.
Neither said anything.
Vivian sent a card.
Not a gift.
The card said:
Merry Christmas, Lucy. I hope someday I can show you I have learned better ways to be your grandmother.
No demand.
No:
You owe me forgiveness.
I read it first.
Then gave it to Lucy.
She placed it beside her rabbit.
“Can she come next year?”
“I don’t know.”
May you like
“Okay.”
Children tolerate uncertainty better than adults.
