Chapter 21 - Vivian’s lawyer asks about reconciliation

Her attorney called Paige.

“Vivian wants structured family mediation.”

I said no.

Then, three months later:

Maybe.

Not with Lucy.

Adults first.

Vivian entered mediation wearing pearls and the expression of someone attending a shareholder dispute.

She said:

“I was worried about Lucy.”

I answered:

“You were worried about losing leverage.”

“I believed your job consumed you.”

“You could have asked.”

“You don’t listen.”

“That does not authorize false evidence.”

She looked down.

Then:

“You were going to stop paying the mortgage.”

“Yes.”

“And abandon the house your father loved.”

“No. I was going to stop paying a debt that is not mine.”

Her face hardened.

Finally honest.

“That house is our family.”

May you like

“No. It is real estate where our family lived.”

She hated that sentence.
