Chapter 23 - Lucy asks if she caused Christmas

One night Lucy said:
“If I didn’t take bread, Grandma wouldn’t lock me.”
I sat beside her.
“No.”
“She said manners.”
“Reaching for food or asking at the wrong time does not make an adult lock you away.”
“I was rude?”
“Maybe you reached before you were supposed to.”
She frowned.
“So bad?”
“No.”
Then:
“And even if you were rude, adults have safer ways to correct behavior.”
She looked at me.
“You broke table.”
There it was.
“Yes.”
“Safe?”
“No.”
She stared.
“I was very angry.”
“Like Grandma?”
The question hurt.
“Yes. Different reason. But I still did something destructive.”
Lucy thought.
Then:
“Don’t break mine.”
May you like
I laughed.
“Deal.”
