Chapter 14 - Lenora pleads

Lenora’s assault case did not go to trial.
The video was too clear.
She accepted a plea to misdemeanor assault.
Sentence:
Twelve months probation.
Forty hours community service.
Anger-management counseling.
No contact with Kerensa except through counsel regarding necessary civil matters.
Fine.
Medical restitution:
Kerensa’s uninsured evaluation costs directly attributable to the incident.
No jail.
No felony.
No inflated punishment.
Lenora told the court:
“I did not intend to endanger the pregnancy.”
Kerensa believed that might be true.
So did I.
But intent to harm the fetus was not required to recognize recklessness toward a pregnant woman.
Then my own diversion.
I completed the first classes.
One instructor asked:
“What did throwing the suitcase accomplish?”
“Nothing useful.”
“Did it protect your wife?”
“No.”
“Did it punish your stepmother?”
“For about three seconds.”
“And after?”
May you like
“It gave everyone another legal problem.”
That was unpleasantly accurate.
