Chapter 17 - Kerensa’s prenatal appointment

At thirty-three weeks, Kerensa’s pregnancy remained stable.
No growth restriction.
Normal movement.
No signs the garage fall caused ongoing complication.
Dr. Porter said:
“We cannot connect every later symptom to one event, especially when current findings are reassuring.”
Kerensa appreciated that.
She was tired of relatives saying:
“You almost lost the baby.”
No one knew that.
Fear was real.
Catastrophe had not occurred.
Then delivery planning.
Kerensa listed who could visit hospital.
Me.
Her sister.
Her mother.
My father?
No.
Lenora?
Absolutely not.
The hospital placed privacy instructions on chart according to policy.
No secret access.
No grandmother exception.
Then Kerensa asked me:
“Will you tell your father?”
“Yes.”
I did.
He said:
“You’re keeping me from my grandchild.”
“No. Kerensa is deciding who is present while she gives birth.”
“I’m your father.”
“That does not make you her patient.”
He went silent.
I was getting better at conflict.

Late.
But better.
