Chapter 20 - The baby is born

Kerensa went into labor at thirty-nine weeks.
Not because of the garage incident.
Not early.
Not dramatic.
Eleven hours.
Epidural.
A brief fetal heart-rate deceleration during pushing that resolved with routine interventions.
Then our daughter was born.
Elodie.
Seven pounds, four ounces.
Healthy.
Kerensa cried.
I cried more.
No one filmed.
No family ambush.
My father learned from a text after mother and baby were stable.
Elodie is here. Kerensa and baby are well. We will contact you about visits when ready.
He replied:
Thank God.
Then:
Please let me see her.
Kerensa read it.
“What do you want?”
“I want what you want.”
She stared.
“Careful. That sounds like avoiding.”
She was right.
I thought.
“I don’t want them at the hospital.”
“Neither do I.”
Decision made.
Two weeks later, Kerensa agreed to let my father meet Elodie at our house.
