Chapter 18 - My father offers the house back

Graham asked to meet.
Public office.
Lawyers available but not sitting between us.
He placed a proposal on the table.
He wanted to repurchase the house.
Price:
$4.25 million.
Financing:
Part cash.
Part promissory note.
Part future company distributions.
I read.
“No.”
His face hardened.
“You made two hundred thousand dollars in seven months.”
“That isn’t why.”
“Then why?”
“Kerensa and I live there.”
“You can buy another house.”
“So can you.”
He leaned back.
“That house is ours.”
“No. It was yours.”
“You know what I mean.”
I did.
History.
Identity.
Control.
He said:
“Your mother chose every room.”
My mother had died when I was twenty-six.
That house carried her too.
For a moment I almost gave in.
Then I remembered Kerensa on the garage floor.
“No.”
He looked older.
“What if I leave you the company?”
I laughed once.
Not cruelly.
Sadly.
May you like
“You still think everything is an exchange.”
He did not deny it.
