Chapter 16 - The Nursery Logs Become a Timeline

The monitor manufacturer helped interpret the technical records.

Forty-three power interruptions did not become forty-three abuse allegations.

Investigators were careful.

They matched them against other records.

Fifteen happened when no one could identify a meaningful event.

Ignored.

Eight occurred during known house cleaning or maintenance.

Probably ordinary.

Several aligned with Valerie rearranging nursery furniture.

Could be nothing.

But eleven clustered around care-provider visits that were canceled, shortened, or moved.

Four occurred immediately after Valerie and Dad argued about Leo’s therapy.

Three matched dates when the respite aide had been scheduled before Valerie terminated the service.

That did not prove physical abuse on those days.

It proved something narrower.

Valerie was repeatedly taking the monitoring system offline during the same period she was reducing outside observation of Leo’s care.

Her own messages supplied motive.

“I hate feeling watched in my own house.”

“I don’t need Daniel reviewing every cry.”

“This camera needs to go.”

Dad had responded:

“It’s for Leo, not you.”

Valerie:

“Same thing.”

There it was.

To Valerie, monitoring Leo felt like monitoring her.

May you like

Instead of negotiating privacy and caregiving boundaries, she unplugged the device.

The habit eventually followed her into the worst moment.
