Chapter 9 - The Voice Memo

Dad found a voice memo accidentally.

Not by searching Valerie’s private phone.

It had synced months earlier to the family tablet because she had used the shared cloud account.

Her lawyer later agreed the household account was legitimately accessible.

The memo sounded like Valerie talking to herself.

Maybe practicing for therapy.

Maybe preparing a conversation with Dad.

She said:

“I can’t live like this for eighteen years.”

Then:

“Everything is about what Leo needs.”

A pause.

“Daniel acts like I’m horrible for wanting a life.”

Another:

“I don’t want therapists in my house telling me where to put furniture.”

Then something more revealing.

“I need to get out before everybody decides I’m the problem.”

Dad stopped playback.

Looked at me.

“She wanted to leave.”

That was not a crime.

Parents can leave marriages.

Mothers can admit they are not coping.

Custody and support can be worked out lawfully.

The tragedy was that Valerie never had the conversation honestly.

Instead she began removing witnesses before removing herself.
