Chapter 23 - The Baby Monitor Comes Down

When Leo was almost four, the old camera was no longer useful.

The crib was gone.

He had a regular bed.

Dad stood on a ladder to remove the mount.

I held the screws.

Grandpa stood nearby giving advice nobody requested.

“You’re stripping the head.”

“I’m not.”

“You are.”

“Mark.”

Leo sat on the carpet.

“What doing?”

“Taking the old camera down.”

“Why?”

“You don’t need it anymore.”

He thought.

“Camera mine?”

“Used to be.”

“Can have?”

Dad looked horrified.

I laughed.

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because you’ll take it apart.”

“Yeah.”

At least honest.

Dad removed it.

Patched the holes.

Painted them.

No ceremony.

No one smashed the camera.

No one preserved it beneath glass.

Evidence copies remained with counsel and the case record.

The physical object had finished its job.

A wall became a wall again.
