Chapter 21 - Mark Learns to Ask

Grandpa’s anger-management course produced one visible change.

He started asking before acting.

Not always elegantly.

One afternoon Leo was learning to move around the living room with his mobility cane.

Grandpa saw him approaching a chair.

Instinctively reached.

Stopped.

Asked the specialist:

“Do I move that?”

“No.”

“Why not?”

“He’s detecting it.”

Leo tapped the chair.

Changed direction.

Kept walking.

Grandpa looked amazed.

Later he told me:

“I would’ve moved everything.”

“I know.”

“I thought helping meant removing the problem.”

Sometimes it does.

Sometimes helping means letting someone encounter a safe version of the problem and learn.

Grandpa understood slowly.

He was sixty-three by then.

Still learning.

Good.
