Chapter 25 - Evan Leaves for College

I left home at nineteen.
Not far.
Ninety minutes.
The first night, I called Dad four times.
The fifth time he refused to answer.
Then texted:
GO HAVE A LIFE.
I called Grandpa.
He answered:
“Your father says go have a life.”
Traitors.
I lasted three days before driving home.
Leo heard the door.
“Ev!”
He came down the hallway with his cane.
Tap.
Sweep.
Tap.
I crouched.
He found me by voice.
Then touched my face.
“You gone.”
“College.”
“Come back.”
“I did.”
That became the lesson.
Leaving is not always abandonment.
People can go.
Then return.
Valerie’s choices had made departure frightening in our family.
We refused to teach Leo that everyone who leaves is dangerous.
I went back to school Sunday night.
He cried.
So did I.

Then Tuesday came.
Everyone survived.
