Chapter 5 - The Strange Thing About the Power Cord

The forensic technician found something else.
The monitor maintained connection-event logs.
Not video.
Technical activity.
Power transitions.
Wi-Fi reconnects.
Local-storage activation.
Over the previous ninety days, the monitor had lost wall power forty-three times.
Dad stared at the number.
“That can’t be right.”
The nursery did not have electrical problems.
No breaker failures.
No scheduled outages.
Most interruptions lasted between twenty minutes and two hours.
Almost all happened during daytime.
Almost all happened when Dad was at work.
I was often at school.
Valerie was usually home with Leo.
The technician cautioned us:
“A power-loss log doesn’t tell us who unplugged it.”
Correct.
The current attack did.
Previous incidents required corroboration.
Forty-three outages were not proof of forty-three bad acts.
But they were enough to ask questions.
