Chapter 24 - Leo Learns About Valerie

We did not tell Leo the full story at four.
He asked:
“Where Mom Valerie?”
He knew photographs.
Name.
Not memory.
Dad answered:
“Valerie hurt you when you were a baby, so adults made rules to keep you safe.”
Leo touched his cane.
“Hurt eyes?”
“No.”
“Why?”
“We don’t know every reason.”
“Ev there?”
“Yes.”
“Grandpa?”
“Yes.”
“Dad?”
“I came afterward.”
Leo thought.
Then:
“Valerie bad?”
Dad did not use the easy word.
“She did something very dangerous and wrong.”
“Always?”
“No. People are more than one thing. But the wrong thing was serious enough that you need protection.”
Too much philosophy for four.
Leo said:
“Snack.”
Conversation over.
Truth can be layered.

It does not need to be dumped.
But it should not become a surprise weapon later.
