Chapter 20 - Evan Is Allowed to Be Seventeen Again

After the attack, everyone treated me like another parent.
Doctors called me.
Relatives asked me how Leo was sleeping.
Grandpa asked whether I could skip school to attend appointments.
Finally Dad noticed.
“No.”
Grandpa looked offended.
“I just asked.”
Dad said:
“He is seventeen.”
“I know.”
“He saved Leo. That does not promote him to co-parent.”
That sentence freed me.
I loved Leo.
I also wanted:
Basketball.
Friends.
College applications.
A date without checking the baby monitor app every fifteen minutes.
My therapist said:
“You can protect someone in a crisis without owing them permanent surveillance.”
I deleted the monitor app from my phone.
Dad kept it.
First night, I almost reinstalled.
Did not.
