Police asked whether I truly knew nothing.
Fair.
The hidden room was inside my house.
I paid utilities.
I traveled frequently.
My wife controlled renovations.
Could a reasonable husband fail to notice a seven-year-old for five years?

My travel:
About eighty nights yearly.
Workdays long.
Basement rarely used by me because wine/storage handled by staff.

“You could have blocked her.”

“If I knew she wasn’t reaching for Nora, yes.”
I did not know.

Then Vivian used the slap publicly.

“Daniel Carter assaulted his wife before understanding the circumstances.”

Media loved it.
My company board asked questions.
I was not fired.
