Chapter 15 - Nora learns Rachel is dead

Vivian had told Nora Rachel died.
So the fact was not new.
The truth around it was.
Nora believed:
Rachel became sick because Nora was “difficult.”
Vivian had said:
“Your mother could not handle stress.”
That turned Rachel’s death into Nora’s guilt.
Therapist Dr. Allison Reed corrected carefully.
“Your mother died from a blood clot after surgery.”
“Because she was sad?”
“Sadness did not cause the blood clot.”
“Because I left?”
“You did not leave. An adult took you.”
Nora cried for twenty minutes.
Then asked:
“Did Mom look?”
“Yes.”
We showed evidence only when therapist thought appropriate.
Not police files.
A photograph of Rachel at a missing-child vigil.
Nora’s face on poster.
Then:
“She wanted me?”
“Yes.”
That question appeared repeatedly.
“She wanted me?”
“Yes.”
Vivian’s strongest control over Nora had been a lie:
Rachel gave up.
No one came.
Police would take her away.
Daniel hated children in basement.
Ellie would be scared of her.
Every one false.
Then Ellie.
She asked why Nora could not sleep in her room.
Because trauma specialists recommended giving Nora choice and space.
Nora chose a guest bedroom with door open.
Ellie dragged a blanket into hallway.
“I sleep here.”
We moved her back eventually.

Nora smiled.
