Chapter 9 - Rachel did not die because of Vivian

Rachel died eleven months after Nora disappeared.

For years Vivian’s family whispered:

Stress killed her.

That was not medical fact.

Rachel developed a pulmonary embolism after reconstructive leg surgery.

She collapsed at home.

Emergency treatment failed.

Autopsy:

Pulmonary thromboembolism associated with postoperative risk.

No toxicology evidence of poisoning.

No trauma.

No evidence Vivian caused her death.

That mattered because Rachel’s recording began:

“If anything happens to me…”

The sentence sounded like a murder prediction.

It was not proof of murder.

Police had reviewed death at the time.

No homicide finding.

Hale reopened the file only to confirm there was no overlooked evidence.

Same conclusion.

Vivian could be responsible for terrible crimes without being responsible for Rachel’s death.

Then Rachel’s hidden evidence.

Her attorney Maya? New character okay. Let's use Helen Ward, Rachel's injury attorney.

Helen had stored:

A flash drive.

Copies of Hawthorne ledgers.

Crestview invoices.

Bank statements.

Two recordings.

A handwritten timeline.

Why had police not received them five years ago?

Helen said Rachel instructed her to preserve for civil fraud claim, but after Nora disappeared she provided relevant threat materials to detectives.

The full billing package remained under attorney file retention because the insurer dispute continued.

Later, files were archived.

When Hale reopened case, Helen produced them under appropriate legal process.

One spreadsheet showed:

Crestview billed:

$286,400

in services Rachel disputed.

Vivian received:

$146,000

from Crestview consulting.

Dean Mercer received the remainder as company revenue after wages/costs.

Then another transfer.

Crestview paid Vivian:

$240,000

three weeks after Nora disappeared.

Description:

Contract termination settlement.

Why so large?

Dean said later:

To buy out Vivian’s consulting contract.

But the contract itself capped termination at:

$30,000.

The additional $210,000 lacked contractual basis.

Possible hush payment.

Then Rachel’s note:

Vivian says she can fix Dean if I stop trying to take Nora.

Another:

She asked where the rabbit bag is. I told her she’ll never find it.

The rabbit bag.

What was inside?

Not yet found.

Then Hale searched evidence from Rachel’s apartment after death.

No rabbit bag.

Nora’s childhood belongings had been divided.

Some to storage.

Some to Vivian.

One photograph showed Nora carrying a blue backpack shaped like a rabbit.

Police had never located it.

Vivian had.
