Chapter 6 - The passage was built before I knew Vivian

The concealed passage was not original.

Part of the basement service chase was.

The room was modified.

A contractor remembered.

Elias Grant, now sixty-one.

Five years earlier, Vivian hired him through a small renovation firm to:

“Convert old storage behind mechanical wall.”

He installed:

Wood framing.

Ventilation.

Electrical outlets.

A sliding shelving unit.

A small concealed door.

He thought it was:

Wine-storage security.

Why no permit?

Interior nonstructural work, Vivian told him no permit necessary.

Some electrical work should have been inspected.

It was not.

Payment:

Cashier’s checks from Vivian’s personal account.

Dates:

Six weeks before Nora disappeared.

That changed everything.

Vivian did not improvise after a park accident.

The hidden space was prepared before Nora vanished.

Then materials:

Insulated wall panels.

Acoustic batting.

Vent ducts.

A locking mechanism installed on the outer side of one interior door.

Elias said:

“I thought they were securing valuables.”

Did he see a bed?

“No.”

Child items?

“No.”

Then basement bathroom.

A rarely used half bath had been modified with handheld shower connection.

Vivian told me she wanted it for washing the dog we never ended up adopting.

I remembered.

The dog.

She joked about it.

There was no dog.

Then grocery spending.

Our household bills were high enough that extra food for a child could hide easily.

Vivian handled most grocery orders.

Separate recurring purchase:

Children’s multivitamins began five years earlier.

We had no child then.

I thought they were hers.

She told me supplements.

Then clothing.

Online purchases to charity resale? No.

Records showed girls’ clothing sizes changing over years.

Vivian frequently bought gifts for nieces/cousins.

No one noticed.

Then school.

Nora had none.

Vivian taught basic reading using workbooks.

The hidden room contained:

Alphabet books.

First-grade math.

Children’s novels.

A dictionary.

No internet-enabled device.

No way to contact outside world.

Then Nora’s movements.

She was not inside the smallest cavity continuously.

The passage connected to:

Basement storage.

A concealed room approximately nine by twelve feet.

Utility bathroom.

A narrow wall chase reaching kitchen vent.

When Daniel traveled, Vivian sometimes let Nora use basement after Ellie slept.

Nora knew upstairs only from sounds and brief nighttime trips.

May you like

Five years.

A house can contain entire worlds if the person you trust controls which doors you open.
