Chapter 22 - Camilla’s Apology

Camilla wrote Pippa a letter.
The therapist held it.
At six, Pippa asked:
“Camilla sorry?”
“Yes.”
“Can hear?”
We read it.
Pippa,
I locked you inside the dog crate.
I told myself I was teaching you to listen.
I was wrong.
The crate was for a dog, not a child.
You were allowed to be upset.
You were allowed to get out of a time-out when you were frightened and ask for help.
I also told adults that your mistakes meant something was wrong with you.
That was unfair.
You did not cause my choices.
I am sorry.
You do not have to answer me.
Pippa listened.
Then:
“Did she pack fox?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“She thought you were going to stay somewhere else for a few days.”
“Without you?”
“Yes.”
Pippa became quiet.
Then:
“No.”

That was her entire response.
We did not ask for more.
