Chapter 6 - The Dog That Wasn’t There

Camilla eventually explained.

Her sister’s dog, Archie, had stayed with us for nine days two months earlier.

Pippa pulled his tail once.

Archie yelped.

We corrected her.

She apologized.

Never did it again.

Camilla’s intake form said:

“Repeated cruelty toward household dog.”

Repeated?

No.

Cruelty?

A child making one impulsive mistake with an animal should be taught gently and firmly.

But turning one tail-pull into a pattern of cruelty was something else.

Why?

Because residential placement required evidence that ordinary home management was failing.

Camilla needed severity.

So she upgraded incidents.

Not entirely invented.

Reframed.

That was the pattern.
