Chapter 3 - The school application

The residential academy was real.

Hawthorne Ridge Preparatory School.

Excellent reputation.

Boarding beginning at age nine.

Students from wealthy families.

No abuse scandal.

No secret institution.

The problem was consent.

Sophie’s parents shared legal custody.

Major educational decisions required both.

The application listed:

Mother:

Victoria Hale.

Father:

Daniel Hale.

Under decision-making authority:

Mother holds final educational authority under existing parenting agreement.

False.

Daniel did not.

Then attached:

A PDF excerpt supposedly from family court order.

It contained language:

Mother shall have tie-breaking authority regarding educational placement.

Daniel’s actual order said:

Neither parent shall have unilateral tie-breaking authority.

Someone altered the excerpt.

Was it Victoria?

Metadata showed file created on her laptop account.

Her lawyer would later argue assistant could have done it.

But she submitted it electronically under her login.

Then Hawthorne Ridge admissions.

They had not finalized enrollment.

Conditional offer only.

They still required:

Official custody documentation.

Father’s acknowledgment.

Medical forms.

So Sophie was not secretly enrolled beyond reversal.

Good.

But Victoria had already paid:

$35,000 deposit.

From whose money?

Her own account.

No theft.

Then reason given to school:

“Complex family transition following remarriage.”

She described Sophie as:

“Highly anxious due divided loyalty.”

“Overdependent on father.”

“Competitive with future stepbrother.”

Competitive with Noah?

Sophie had never been competitive.

Victoria was creating the label before creating the behavior.

Then another note:

Residential structure may reduce unhealthy attachment to both paternal households.

Both paternal households.

Meaning Daniel.

And me.

She wanted Sophie detached from men she believed competed for emotional importance.

Daniel said:

May you like

“She thinks love is territory.”

That sounded right.
