Chapter 9 - The school calls Daniel

Hawthorne Ridge contacted Daniel after receiving certified custody order from his attorney.
Admissions director apologized.
“We should have verified before accepting deposit.”
They refunded most deposit minus application fee.
No scandal.
No lawsuit necessary yet.
Then internal school file contained parent narrative written by Victoria.
One line:
Sophie exhibits inappropriate protective attachment to younger child Noah Marconi and may benefit from separation.
Daniel stared at it.
“What does that mean?”
It meant Sophie was kind to Noah.
Victoria reframed compassion as pathology.
Another:
Father Daniel Hale reinforces dependency by responding immediately to distress calls.
Meaning he answered his daughter.
Then Daniel said:
“She wants Sophie to stop believing someone will come when she asks.”
That sentence stayed with me.
Because Noah had the opposite experience.
When he cried:
I came.
Margaret came.
Victoria saw that bond and hated how little she controlled it.
Then Sophie’s interview disclosed:
“Mom said after wedding, Mr. Raffaele will have wife and won’t need kids all over him.”
Mr. Raffaele.
She had not yet grown comfortable calling me anything else.
Then:
“She said Dad will get used to school.”
“Do you think he would?”
“No.”
“Why?”
“He calls every night.”
Then:
“Would you want to stay with Mom if she didn’t send you?”
Sophie looked down.
“I want Mom when she’s nice.”
That was the tragedy.

Children rarely want villains defeated.
They want parents to stop hurting them.
