Chapter 7 - Sophie’s mother was not trying to replace Noah with Sophie

At first, gossip among guests turned story simplistic.

Victoria wanted Sophie favored.

Noah mistreated.

But Sophie’s documents proved Victoria planned to send Sophie away too.

So the chair was not:

My child over yours.

It was something else.

The therapist reviewing Sophie’s statements described a pattern:

Victoria created scarcity.

Attention.

Space.

Approval.

Then forced Sophie to “win” it.

After Sophie complied:

Victoria withdrew anyway.

Example:

Sophie wanted Victoria to attend her piano recital.

Victoria said:

“If you stop running to your father every time he calls, I’ll be there.”

Sophie ignored one of Daniel’s calls.

Victoria still missed recital for a spa event.

Another:

Victoria promised a mother-daughter weekend if Sophie stopped “babying” Noah.

Sophie avoided Noah for two days.

Weekend canceled because Victoria traveled with me.

Sophie learned:

Love required competition.

Winning did not guarantee reward.

That creates dependence.

Then Noah.

Victoria could not manipulate him verbally as easily.

Three-year-old.

Attached strongly to me and Margaret.

So she targeted structure.

Send him somewhere.

Limit direct access.

Make me rely on her reports.

Her obsession was not Sophie’s victory.

It was being the emotional gatekeeper for everyone.
