Chapter 14 - Tilly asks if her mother was killed because of diamonds

I wanted to protect her from details.
Too much protection becomes lying.
So I told her an age-appropriate truth.
“Mom found out some adults were doing dangerous, illegal things with the charity.”
“And they hurt her?”
“Yes.”
“Because she told?”
“Because she was going to.”
Tilly looked at her hands.
“Was Mom brave?”
I almost said yes.
Then remembered how praise can become obligation.
“She was scared too.”
“Still did it?”
“Yes.”
Tilly nodded.
“That’s brave.”

Her word.
