Chapter 3 - Tilly’s injuries

Tilly was taken to a hospital.

I went with her.

The gala became somebody else’s problem.

Her examination showed:

A bruised shoulder.

A scraped knee.

Mild wrist sprain.

No fracture.

No concussion.

No spinal injury.

No internal injury.

She had been lucky.

The emergency physician looked at me.

“Who kicked her?”

“Clarissa Dane.”

“Relationship?”

“Family associate.”

Tilly interrupted.

“She hates me.”

I looked at her.

“What makes you say that?”

“She says Daddy only cares about me now.”

That was not the first comment.

Apparently Clarissa had told Tilly at another dinner:

“Before you came along, adults could actually finish a conversation.”

Another time:

“Your father used to be interesting.”

I had never heard either.

Why had Tilly not told me?

Because, she said:

May you like

“You get scary when you’re mad.”

That sentence stayed with me.
