Chapter 15 - The foundation audit

The Bellafonte-Dane Children’s Relief Foundation hired independent forensic accountants.

Government investigators reviewed records separately.

Findings:

Twenty-three jewelry lots had material discrepancies.

Not all fraudulent.

Some documentation errors.

Some legitimate resets.

Some donor substitutions properly approved but poorly recorded.

Nine lots showed strong evidence of intentional high-value substitution.

Estimated aggregate diversion:

Approximately $6.8 million.

Not hundreds of millions.

Enough.

Recovered assets:

Several stones still identifiable in private collections.

Some buyers had purchased without knowledge.

Complicated.

Insurers negotiated claims.

Donor tax filings required correction in some cases.

The charity was not dissolved.

Its board was replaced.

Independent compliance imposed.

The organization eventually continued under a new name without Bellafonte or Dane family control.

Good.

Charity should not be family furniture.
