Chapter 26 - The staircase again

Two years after the gala, the mansion hosted a much smaller benefit.

No Bellafonte foundation.

Independent children’s hospital fundraiser.

Tilly was ten.

She approached the staircase.

Stopped.

I noticed from across the foyer.

Did not run.

Did not call her name.

Her therapist had taught me:

Let her decide whether she needs help.

Tilly placed one hand on the rail.

Climbed.

At the third step she paused.

Looked down.

Then continued.

At the landing she turned toward me.

I gave her a small nod.

She rolled her eyes.

Because she was ten.

That was perfect.

Later she told me:

“I knew you were watching.”

“I watch everything.”

“That’s creepy.”

“I am your father.”

May you like

“Still creepy.”

Progress.
