Chapter 1 - The Quiet Nursery

The neonatal intensive care unit at St. Jude’s Memorial Hospital was a world defined by soft hums, glowing monitors, and a delicate, reverent silence. Outside, the rain washed over the city streets, but inside the glass walls of the third-floor ward, time seemed to slow down.

Claire Bennett stood near the central nursing station, reviewing the electronic chart on a tablet. At thirty-six, she had spent thirteen years as a NICU nurse, pouring her heart into caring for the most fragile lives. Soft blonde hair was tied into her usual practical bun, her dark-green medical scrubs fitting comfortably as she moved between incubators. She was compassionate, fiercely protective of her infant patients, and possessed an observant eye that missed nothing.

A sudden shift in the ward’s atmosphere made Claire raise her head.

Walking through the double glass doors was a man who seemed entirely out of place in a hospital nursery.

Sebastian Moretti walked in alone. At forty-two, he was one of the most powerful and feared men in the city, carrying an aura of absolute command. He was tall, heavily muscular, and ruggedly handsome, his thick dark hair styled back and light stubble defining his sharp jawline. He wore a perfectly tailored charcoal suit, a crisp black dress shirt, and polished black leather shoes. Intricate, dark tattoos spilled up his neck, hintings at a life lived in the shadows.

Behind the exterior glass doors, two towering, broad-shouldered bodyguards in dark suits stood guard, their eyes scanning the hallway.

The other nurses on shift exchanged wide-eyed, nervous glances, pulling back toward their desks. Everyone in the city knew the Moretti name.

Sebastian did not glance at the guards or the nervous staff. With quiet, controlled movements, he unbuttoned his expensive charcoal suit jacket, slipped it off, and folded it neatly over the back of a waiting chair.

He walked slowly down the row of incubators until he stopped in front of a small station in the corner.

Inside the clear plastic dome lay Baby Boy Miller—a premature newborn weighing barely four pounds. The baby was wrapped in a simple cream hospital blanket, a tiny white knitted cap resting on his head. Unlike the surrounding incubators, which were decorated with blue and pink balloons, family photographs, and colorful get-well cards, Baby Miller’s corner was starkly bare. There were no flowers. No stuffed animals. No visiting family.

Sebastian stood before the crib, his tall frame casting a warm shadow over the clear plastic. His hard, intimidating expression slowly softened as he stared down at the fragile infant.

The baby squirmed, his chest rising rapidly as he let out a faint, squeaky cry.

Sebastian stared at the empty card holder on the side of the incubator. His intense dark eyes shifted toward Claire, who had cautiously stepped closer.

"Who’s with him?" Sebastian asked quietly. His deep, gravelly voice was low and surprisingly gentle.
